Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound with the formula C14H12O2, colorless oily liquid, insoluble in water. Slightly soluble in malonediphthalein. Soluble in oil, ethanol, ether. It produces a sharp, burning sensation on the tongue. At temperatures below 178ºC it exists as clear, colorless crystals. Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound which is used as a medication and insect repellent. As a medication it is used to treat scabies and lice. Scabies is a skin infection caused by the mite sarcoptes scabiei. It is characterised by severe itching (particularly at night), red spots, and may lead to a secondary infection. Benzyl benzoate is lethal to this mite and so is useful in the treatment of scabies. It is also used to treat lice infestation of the head and body. Benzyl benzoate is not the treatment of choice for scabies due to its irritant properties.In the essence, especially in the flower flavor is a better fixing agent, diluent or solvent.
